F. E. "Ab" Abernethy's Banita Creek Trail Project 2015 - Present
This project began with a banquet in February 2015 honoring Dr. F. E. Abernethy. Held at Banita Creek Hall it was an evening to remember, especially since Dr. Abernethy passed away just a few weeks later. The organizers (Frances Shofner, Diana Walker, and Jackie Warthan), raised about $20,000.00 and have continued to raise funds for dirt work, benches, retaining walls, tanbark, and other materials for the Banita Creek Trail project. This project is being conducted in full cooperation with the City of Nacogdoches and FoHNI is serving as the treasurer. |
Dr. Abernethy was the ringleader of citizens who pushed for and physically carved out the LaNana Creek Trail beginning in the 1980s. Ever since then, there has been a desire to make a continuous loop around Nacogdoches so that citizens can enjoy nature, exercise, and learn about the town's history by using the trail. It is the second half of this trail, along Banita Creek, which we are helping support today.
